Even up close I had to squint ... "Johnson & Sons, Pty Limited, Leather & Grindery Merchants, Wholesale & Retail" ...
It does sound Dickensian, I agree. I gather a grindery is a place where you can purchase those little tools that leatherworkers use to make and decorate their wares.
I think they speak volumes about our past and our appreciation of it. I have a few in my knapsak (sp?) and am always keeping a watchful eye out ... hence the generic title ...
I've been catching up your blog and must tell you you allways amaze me with your posts and fantastic shots, some of them very 'Julie' style indeed! :-)
I like this photo of a blueish faded sign with a blueish tree nearby very much - but what does it say? ... & Grindery?
ReplyDeleteA grindery merchant sounds like something straight out of Dickens.

ReplyDeleteI really like old signs like this, they preserve a past era. There are few down at Haymarket too.

ReplyDeleteWonderful old sign, Julie! It certainly is tattered. I would never have gotten the word "Leather".

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the nice words.
I ignored what a grindery is or was. Love this kind of photo and never miss a faded sign on a wall.
ReplyDeleteI do like these old ads on walls. Petrea did some interesting ones too. The tree to the right adds that little something to this photo.
