McElhone Park in front of Elizabeth Bay house
Using a printed Google map, we weaved our way via lanes and walking paths from Rushcutters Bay to Beare Park and McElhone park in Elizabeth Bay. This entire area is to die for. And talk about secluded ... on the final weekend of winter there were people sunbathing in swimming costumes!
Elizabeth Bay house is the georgian style building with the dome in the centre of this photo taken from a ferry in the harbour
The view back across Elizabeth Bay as I made my way between the apartments up toward McElhone Park
Elizabeth Bay lies between Rushcutters Bay and Wooloomooloo Bay all of which are accessible via walking paths. In the suburb named after the wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie, Elizabeth Bay house was built in 1837 for Alexander Macleay who was the Surveyor-General of the colony. Is is managed by the Historic Houses Trust and is open to the general public. I did not have enough time to do it justice, so will return next week.
And from the top, looking back over the park to the harbour beyond. Clark Island lies straight ahead

Interesting photos from a bright clear day in Sydney. Your colors are intense. You made good use of a days walk.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pics, love the first one :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks idyllic - beautiful park and a lovely view over the water. I'll bet that was a gorgeous place to live, even in 1837.
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful. Thanks for taking me along.
ReplyDeleteOh, lovely, lovely sights! What a beautiful place.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing and for visiting my garden.
I'm sure it was beautiful in 1837, Jenny, but I'm sure they didn't have Google maps.
ReplyDeleteThey didn't have Google maps in 1982 when I was in Sydney, either, so my young brother and I had to be content with the usual tourist things ...the bridge, the zoo, a play at the Opera House.
I'd love to go back, Julie, but I need a ship to take me there because I can't handle the long flights from Canada. I do keep my eye open for cruise ships going from Vancouver to Sydney, and it is possible. My husband could then fly over to meet me, so we could do the Google map thing together.
Beautiful photos. I do love your depth of color.

What a wonderful tour to take through your lens, Julie. The photos are so vivid. Just a beautiful place' or at least you make it look beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful tour you took us on, Julie. I love the vivid colours of the harbour and apartment blocks. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteFantastic shots Julie. Especially the one at McElhone Park in front of Elizabeth Bay house. I went there quite recently, for the first time ever. The views are spectacular.
ReplyDeleteOne can only be glad to know that you are living in such beauty.

I do love your Sydney photos. The harbour is the most beautiful in the world. (or did I tell you that before?)

ReplyDeletedon't think I've ever been there. Definitely worth a look.

We visited Elizabeth Bay House some years ago. They had a fascinating linen collection on display ... bored my hubby to tears but I was entranced. The weather down in the city is nice at the moment, compared to up here ... I was down there several days last week.
ReplyDeleteThere is a good reason why Sydney tourist maps don't go west of the city. Great photos of very nice a very nice part of Sydney. In about 1982 we tried to find Elizabeth Bay House and failed. Perhaps we were a bit half hearted. Next time.
ReplyDeletealoha,
