A sign of affirmation!

Quite keen to get their contact details across, thought I. So they must be on the lookout for new members, if not of the swim club, then of the drink club!

The Bondi Icebergs Club commenced in 1929. They pride themselves on being a 'winter' swimming club. When my grandmother moved to Bondi in 1956, this end of the beach was referred to as 'the bogey hole'. The club was there, but not as dominant as it has become of late. Their junior swim club is the Bondi Icecubes. That is the Pacific Ocean we are gazing out upon!

This is my contribution to the Signs Signs community.

  1. I think swimming that close to the surf would be terrific, however at my age, I'd better leave my suit on the hook and have a sip upstairs and watch!

  3. It would be wonderful to swim in the pool, with the surf so close but no danger.
    I love the name "Icecubes"!

  6. Anything that suggests cold swimming water puts me off ... did too much of it as a kid going off for swimming training when at the beginning and end of the season there was frost on the grass and no such thing as a heated pool. I guess I was an ice cube.

    Good shot of the baths.

  10. I walked by there 6 months ago. The ocean was very rough and waves were washing into the pool all the time, and one guy was still swimming there!

  11. They breed 'Bergs tough, down Bondi way!

  12. I would love to be in that calm water of the pool beside the crashing water of the ocean!
Now, from an architectural point of view this building for the 'icebergs' looks fantastic - the square windows reminiscent of an ice cube tray!

  13. It would be so neat swimming in the pools while the surf was hitting the sides. What a neat idea for their placement. I like the junior swimmers being called the ice cubes. genie

  14. Beautiful, moody colours. Only been in there once (been past a few times) remember that the food was good.

  16. We didn't make it to Bondi on our one visit to Sydney years ago but I certainly don't associate it with icebergs. Some cubes in my gin and tonic would be just fine.

  17. That building appeals to the tidy mind I don't have and what a setting for that swimming pool. Wonderful!
interesting name for a swimming club in Oz, even in winter.

    Happy Australia Day, Julie xxx

  18. I saw a show on the TV the other week called "Greatest Cities" on Sydney. They featured the Bondi Icebergers as quintessential Sydney. I believe the membership requirements are incredibly onerous.

  19. For the swim club, yes. So many swims (sans wet suit) during the winter months. I suspect the upstairs club is only onerous on the hip pocket. Unlike Ann, I have never eaten there.

  21. Cat: Mostly our pools are like this in Australia, although not all our ocean pools.

What are they like in your neck of the woods?

  22. They certainly are making sure that their details are out there Julie, great pictures of this spot, I loved doing the Bronte to Bondi walk.
