| Just off Oxford Street, in a triangular pocket handkerchief of narrow streets, sit some of the oldest established residences in Paddington. This area - Gipps, Spring, and Prospect Streets - was designed not long after the decision was taken to establish Victoria Barracks (the late 1830s) on the other side of Oxford Street. Theses single-fronted terraces were the cottages for the tradesmen working on the construction of the new barracks to replace Wynyard Barracks. |
The tradesman in the second photo must have been an ironmonger, Julie. What beautiful iron lacework.
ReplyDeleteI could see myself living happily in this Paddington of terraces. Having followed in my father's trade, I'd fit right in, although his father's trade might have been a bit more useful than printing—Grandpa Davies did plaster and stucco work. When I was Alannah's size, Grandpa was teaching plaster and stucco to the prisoners at the British Columbia Penitentiary. Many of his students came out of "the Pen" completely rehabilitated and went on to lead productive, happy lives, due to that quiet old Scotsman's tutelage and example.

I love all these little old cottages and trying to picture them in their hay day...
ReplyDeleteVery quaint cottages Julie. The different renovations on each half of the cottage in the top photo is quite surprising.
ReplyDeleteThe cottages looks so cute now ... I wonder if back in the beginning they were so lovely or more like the bare nappy valley suburbs.
ReplyDeleteOMG! They are totes adorbs!
ReplyDelete(desperately trying to stay hip and relevant).
I have just been having an enjoyable time browsing through your recent posts. They are all lovely. You are a hard worker (CDP in mind) and still managed to put together this lovely collection.
ReplyDeletenice, it feels as if we've taken a lovely walk with you.
ReplyDeleteI agree with BC, a nice walk down this charming little row of cottages from long ago.

Good bunch of terraces.
ReplyDeleteThose top ones must be tiny. They are quite lovely.
ReplyDeleteIs this the spot you showed me Julie? The climbing bougainville(?)in the second shot looks familiar haha! I can see Dave & Courtney living in something familiar in the future.
ReplyDeleteNo rhis is not the area I walked you through, Grace. I will see if I can spend some time over there and do a couple of posts for you.
ReplyDeleteThanks Julie, I'd love that.
