Friday Flaneur (9) - Well seasoned

There is a serenity to Autumn that is not apparent at other times of the year. Beads of sweat don't form on the brow, nor pond in the small of the back. Cold does not seep into the rib-cage, nor gnaw on the bunions. Bees are not buzzing, animals mating or buds a bursting.

Autumn forgives singularity, contemplation and day-dreaming. Autumn gives of ample time, and encourages the luxury of sloth and self-indulgence.

  2. Each of these contemplative pictures tells a story. I love the tattered hat in the first one, the sense of page-turning drama in the second, and the total mind-consuming interest in the third one. I also like his international shirt!

  3. A very poetic post. And some fitting autumn portraits.

  4. Perhaps you didn't mean it this way, but your post is a kind of elegant rebuff of the Amazon Kindle or whatever Apple has called their own e-book reader--

Would we (viewers) feel the same way about these pictures if the subjects were holding electronic tablets? To me, the object in their hands matters a lot and helps me connect with them.

  6. These pictures are lovely and even though it is spring here, I much prefer autumn.

  7. Autumn, oh, yes, of course. The emotions are very different of those connected to spring.

  8. The words are as lovely as the photographs. What a lovely time of the year this is!

  9. Beautiful pictures of my favorite time of the year for all the reasons you stated...your words are like strokes of a paint brush filling my mind.
I, too, have to agree with Mary Ann. I cannot bring myself to forsake my books...I love the feel, the smell, the heft of a book.

  10. You have captured the essence of autumn without falling leaves beautifully. But I was down it Sydney yesterday ... it felt like summer even into the evening.

Tomorrow in Spain is the day of Book.

  12. These are great Julie, so good to see people reading instead of having their eyes glued to a mobile phone.

  13. Ah, bliss. To be lost in a book as the seasons tick past...summer to autumn, winter to spring...the right words offer the bridge we need.

  14. Three great subjects! I particularly like the second one, she seems deeply engrossed.

  18. I agree about Autumn, it is slower and carefree but I don't like the winds we get here sometimes. I love the light in the second shot.

  19. Very thoughtful photos. I like the first because the strand of cord beneath his hat tells me that he wears reading glasses around his neck as do I. Your prose today is very lovely.

  20. I love your people candid shots... just a few days ago I watched a National Geographic show on TV where they were talking to their top 10 photographers. I have to admit you beat at least one of them with all of your people shots you post here.
