The barracks is the HQ for both Land Command and Training Command for the Australian Army. It does not house regular soldiers. However, there are some families who make the barracks home, evidenced by the scooters and footballs. It is an oasis within bustling Paddington.
While I did not know what was behind the barracks wall, it was a useful landmark when I first visited Sydney. Note the large verandahs, keeping the place cool in summer. What a pity that has been forgotten in modern design.
ReplyDeleteThe details incorporated into this structure are exquisite from the brass(?) decorated vent to the wrought iron railing. Love the archway which you captured so beautifully and that stained glass... what a deep blue!
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed all the photos you have posted on the barracks along with the "story" to match!
Ooo I love the deep blue glass. Mum and Dad had blue glass like that in the casement windows in their house but not in all windows. Dad said the blue glass was more brittle than the other colours.
ReplyDeleteVery good, especially, I like the vent grate thingy.
ReplyDeleteYou do 'close inspections' better than any one I know.
ReplyDeleteI find the cross and southern cross leadlight window most fascinating.
