The renovated Newmarket Hotel has found respectability. In its former life though, as attested by its nickname, it was famous for topless waitresses and chicken schnitzel. The publican at the time, was a woman fleeing cold-war Europe, boasting of her 'home-cooked Hungarian meals'. She sold out in the last decade, her estate making a motza.
Somehow, I have to wonder about a woman who lured patrons in with topless waitresses. You would suppose her schnitzel would have been sufficient, but I guess not.
ReplyDeleteInteresting portrait on the brick wall.

Great nickname.
ReplyDeleteBut why the shamrock eye if she's Hungarian? She's frightening. I would rather not sleep or eat under her roof.
ReplyDeleteShe looks like a tough old bird. Great nickname for the pub!
ReplyDeleteHer portrait doesn't look that hospitable.
ReplyDeleteThe Melbourne office for a couple of companies I worked for were in the St Kilda area. In the days of daily allowances rather then expenses we stayed cheap and pocketed the money ... some pretty seedy cheap places in that neighbourhood. And in the expenses era when we stayed and ate as expensive as the company would tolerate we found nice places too.
