The station was in operation from August 1906, even though the main building was nowhere near complete. The clock-tower was not completed until 1921. I suspect cost was a factor. And a little thing kmown as World War I.
The final image, from the Powerhouse Museum Collection, shows the main building about December 1906. Hard to believe that the clock-tower stands upon the same ground as Carters Barracks, where my great-great-grandfather, William Chapman, was incarcerated in 1839, after spending a couple of months in the hulk Phoenix moored off Lavender Bay.

Is this still in operation as a railway station? So many of these old buildings in the US have been demolished or are now restaurants, offices and/or retail stores.

ReplyDeleteI like Central Station too. It has a bit of an international feel about it. Your great great grandfather was in a hulk for a few months. Was he dead or alive?
