| The Pavilion on Bondi Beach was constructed in 1928, on a site previously occupied by an Edwardian-styled tea-room. In 1978, on its 50th anniversary, it was rebadged as the Bondi Community Centre and officially opened by the State Premier, Neville Wran. I gather from a report in yesterday's SMH that it is about to be rebadged again. Good luck with that. The first photograph in the collage, dated 1924, shows the beachfront looking towards the south-west, with the tearooms in the centre. The next three show the very tired main interior which is a rabbit-warren of small spaces in any community centre, which are hired out to local groups for minimal cost. There are old (and tired) photographs lining the walls. There are also murals, some of which I will show tomorrow. And I end with the grand facade on a very blowy day. |
