Part of my morning walk: east of Glebe Point Road, between Bridge Road and Ferry Road.

The architecture in the first photo is simply spectacular. It reminds me a lot of New Orleans, from the balcony to the spike fencing.

Wow, great contrast! What I like the most in your blog is the broad variety of pictures. Kudos for showing even the unappealing sights. Very rare in the blogosphere!

Two very different takes on defining space. These are wonderful, Julie.

I love both, they are so different, warm and cool. Lovely walk you have Julie.

Beautiful old Victorian cottages, the ycertainly knew how to build houses in those days. So much attention to detail.

We call ourselves Melbournians down here btw.:-)
Cheers.

Sometimes there is more character in a back alley where people let down their defenses or der fences.

Love the ornate balconies of the cottages, but that fence is spectacular...

I love terrace houses and can look at photos of those forever. The laneways can be interesting too.

I like the terrace fronts but in my opinion the alley wins hand's down photographically .... which of course you already knew :-)

Such a big contrast! :(

But the apartments in your first photo are fantastic! The balcony rails look like lace!

Love the houses and the light shinning on them.

What are the structures in the second photo -- tool sheds? Skinny garages?

Great contrast here! The railings on the yellow buildings look lovely! They almost seem to be lace curtains.

I had no idea prickly pears have been such a plague in Australia...

AH: those structures are not garages but were used for parking something. They are the old outdoor toilets which were the reason for the extensive laneway system in our inner suburbs: lanes being used by the night cart man for access to remove the tins of human waste.

JM: Yes, indeed. PP was the bane of my childhood. In Australia it was declared a noxious weed and the Pastures Protection Board would inspect infected properties (nearly everyone) twice a year and issue orders if the infestation showed no sign of being treated.

Friends: Thank you for your response to this post. As many of you will be aware (JE), for some reason I respond immediately to the less attractive aspects of our society. However, I have lots of images of the lovely iron lacework on our terraces so will work up a couple of posts on that, too.

Good contrast - the top photos reminds me of apartments in Hawaii

Julie said...

Good heavens: Hawaii!! I would never have picked that. Provincial UK I would have thought, but how come did the style get planted in Hawaii? Strange how tastes evolve.

That is quite a contrast! The first one reminds me of New Orleans too and the light is perfect!

I actually really like the similarities in these images: both are out of the way places that have been infused with a sense of meaning simply by your having noticed them. Don't know if that makes any sense, but I love the sense of quietness in both images.
