The Premier of NSW is considering putting last year's "big" transport announcement, the $4.8 billion Metro Rail, on the back-burner in favour of investigating an upgrade to the existing "heavy" rail system.
These commuters were hanging about Central Station (aka Sydney Terminus), the hub of the State rail network which is housed in a quaint building at the southern end of the CBD that is reminiscent of an old air-craft hanger. Nothing as grand as Central Station in New York or St Pancras in London or Gare Nord in Paris.
I wonder which proposal our erstwhile commuters would prefer? One that delivers more on-time services, perhaps?

I don't know about the situation in your city, here in Spain it's difficult not to use the car,but I prefer trains and underground.

It's music to my ears that rail travel is being supported...no matter what direction it takes. These are great candids.
I really like this sequence, you've done an excellent job collecting very different people. I don't often find myself in areas with lots of people, so I'm not really comfortable with people shots.
Train stations and airports are fascinating to me--who are these people? Why are they traveling? What story is lurking in each mind?

All lovely but the bottom shot is my favourite says something about being out on the trains for a jaunt. I'm rather found the aircraft hanger look .. it suggests journeys to interesting places to me (even it is it only a trip down from the mountains or home again).
I adore the aircraft hanger look. Reeks of the "people's" terminus, rather than an opulent palace. The stories of the people that I imagine whilst mooching on the main concourse are a delight in my head.

Never the less, I was very glad to hear that YOU took the XPT to Melbourne. I hope that you and I are not dieing breed. Good series of photos.

Thanks for the reminder about the Vivid Festival Julie. I might link my post to my Fire Water post at Campbells Cove during the Vivid Festival last year. I saw something in the newspaper recently about planned light projections on more city buildings for the Vivid Festival this year.

For me, the highlight of VIVID '09 was the link to the history of the Quay/Rocks/Millers Point. That made it come totally to life. I will note it in my diary for the Queens Bday W/end.

I've always liked Sydney Terminal, there's that sense of going somewhere special, not just the normal daily commute.
Aren't the Vivid projections along Macquarie Street going to be of Macquarie because of the anniversary. I thought I read that somewhere.
Your photos always have a kind of snap to them, something to do with the light maybe. I like your new profile picture too. The old one was rather stern. My free opinions are worth what you pay for them.
What a marvellous series of people shots - just makes me weary and feel I'm travelling with them. Oh yes, hurry up the train. You sure do draw us into the atmosphere of it all, Julie.
