Bid - No trumps

Built in 1921 by 'Mills Bros. Builders', this row of shops in Penshurst Street, Willoughby is indicative of many such small ribbon developments of that era. Nowadays, if a shop is not within an arcade or a mall it will struggle to attract a clientele. To enable a retail store for Bridge to survive, one can only assume that the rent is at rock bottom.

or it is possible they own the property themselves.
I have an aversion to malls, so wish stores such as this the best of luck.

Yes, I suppose they could own it themselves, would make more sense. Own it and live above, or have the club rooms above.

We used to shop extensively at small shopping centres like this. But then, we didn't have a car and used the trams and buses or walked. The shops are conveniently clustered around a bus stop, essential then as now.

And parking on Penshurst Street is not something for the faint of heart.

interesting observation; looking pretty lonely along there that's for sure

Bridge seems to be taking off, or perhaps I have reached that certain age when people take up playing it. I wasted many hours on bridge and other card games when at Uni and have not played it since. Can't imagine myself taking it up again now.

This is very much like our local shopping centre Julie. It is really struggling. It seems that when a shop becomes vacant it takes a very long time for it too re-let. Years ago they would have been snapped up. Sad really.
