Forbes Hotel, York Street

The Forbes Hotel was built in 1836, and is named in honour of the first Chief Justice of New South Wales, Sir Francis Forbes (1784-1841). Forbes was the CJ from 1824-1837, and, although English through and through, died in Newtown at the age of 57. Forbes was granted the land which now constitutes South Muswellbrook in 1825. He named his estate 'Skellater' after the family's ancestral estate in Aberdeen in Scotland. I went to High School in Muswellbrook from 1961 - 1965.

I like the brickwork and windows on this one. Am in the middle of my annual spring clear ... gotta go clean some windows right now.

A bit of a curious- and morbid name for the family home.

A name can hold so much history.
