ABOVE: Walking down the other side of Loftus Street. making this facade part of the Lands Building. Keeping in mind that these images were taken on 2nd January, and the teeming hordes were not in the city yet after their night of festivities. This is the block around the Department of Education building. Remember, this building is flanked by Bridge Street, Loftus Street, Bent Street, and Young Street. |
What has gotten into me? Glorious sandstone, and I show the images in B&W. Grilled windows in Loftus Street. Grilled windows in Youmg Street. Wrought iron door grill in Bent Street. BELOW:This young chap was picking his way down Loftus Street to Circular Quay. |

The architectural style reminds me of some of the buildings here.
Sydney's sandstone buildings are the best. I don't remember the trees are they vines up the trees?
I like the contrast of the shiny ducco on the motorbikes against the sandstone.
Diane: I think it is regrowth rather than vines.
William: I woiuld think there are many similarities between Australian and Canadian cities of the 19C.
I like that particular run of sandstone too. When in Melbourne recently I thought of the golden sandstone of Sydney vs the grey stone of Melbourne. Each colour seems to suit the style of city and climate.
I agree with you Joan, about the stone suiting the city. I love the honey coloured sandstone my city was blessed with.
Haven't seen those trees with the growth on the trunks. Must check them out.
This street was a street that always gave me a strange feeling in my younger days. Not sure why. Maybe because it was less busy with the traffic of walkers, I don't know. But still it fascinated me. The sandstone looks as though it is a lighter tone than what i remember. Maybe it has been cleaned?
I like the texture and the golden glow. Well seen!
