A perfect location for a photographic shoot to bed down newly learnt skills, Cockatoo Island played host to Ann from Sydney Meanderings and I for an afternoon.
In the 1840s, after the cliffs on the island were blasted with gunpowder, it took 11 years for convicts to excavate the stone and build the dock.

You really honed in on detail, which I have trouble seeing, something I really need to train my eye to do. Did you end up converting them back? This one looks okay.

wonderful shot. i have such a soft spot for this place, my first ancestor to set foot on aussie soil was actually the engineer in charge of constructing the dry dock there.
Really! That is terrific. Might I talk you into a post about him? I would love to meet him through you. Have you ever been to the island? It is a place that I never tire of. Just to know that so many people toiled away under back-breaking conditions ... does it to me every time. Local history is my drug of choice.
you just might! i wish i could meet him too - he's an ancestor a long way back unfortunately! came here in the 1840s/50s...i've only been once - with my mum last year - just loved it, unfortuantely didn't take my camera!
Cockatoo Island seems to be a great place to contemplate the city and its harbour.
