The Glebe: a tale of two cities

As one walks across the Tasman Bridge, deep in the commanding background rises Mount Wellington which on my first day was blowing a blizzard and covered with a foot of snow!

However, lowering my eyes there is a ridge running N-S on the Derwent side of which rises the glory of the Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens. In the lee of the ridge, on the western or Hobart side of this ridge rises the quaint suburb of The Glebe. Imagine my immense delight ...

This suburb is a hash of about a dozen streets that tumble down the side of the Queen's Domain (1860). However, judging from their Federation styling, I take the suburb to have been settled in the very early years of the 20th century.

Most of the houses (the ones that interest me, at any rate!) are made of weatherboard, but this is not surprising in a state renown for its timber industry. Here for your pleasure is a selection from the 20 or so photographs that I took as I floated around the gorgeous houses.

Oh Julie they are so beautiful! I like them all, but I think the one in the last shot is the most interesting because of the way it is built into the side of the hill.

A delightful expression: a dozen streets tumbling down...

Wonderful post, Julie. How great to explore this cascade of a neighborhood. The details are delightful and you've caught them under a such a blue and shining sky.

I have always loved houses that look like these do in their various configurations. I could spend hours wandering about their open and hidden spaces.

Glorious photos, Julie. The last house does look similar to the one I posted on Cedar Key DP. Frankly, as much as I like them, I wouldn't want to clean either one!

Love the light in which you've captured them, Julie. Bright faces against the bold blue sky.

Just beautiful and so different from the Sydney Glebe. Comparisons are such fun.

Diane, I did a swing aroung Arthur's Circus in Battery Point. I will put it up on Plumbing for you tomorrow. Quite different from these Federation style houses. Tiny Georgian numbers - what I think of as chinless wonders!

they look like the houses in Wellington NZ.
Did you see Letitia St?

Yoh, Letty! Letitia St is just near where I took the overpass to the Queen's Domain! Gorgeous little enclave of yuppydom, I reckon.

Such lovely houses. My house is clapboard/weatherboard underneath the aluminum siding the previous owners slapped on.

I obviously trust your camera settings, but these colors are so vivid and the light so strange to feed a sense of envy...
