A Sydney Christmas - Eleventh Day

Three wise grandparents, Pitt Street Mall
Carol of the Birds (Verse 2 of 3)
Down where the tree-ferns grow by the river,
There where the waters sparkle and quiver,
Deep in the gullies Bell-birds are chiming,
Softly and sweetly their lyric notes rhyming
Orana! Orana! Orana to Christmas Day.

The first Christmas stamps issued by Australia - 1957, 1958 and 1959

Nice idea to focus on the bags. I have seen those stamps somewhere, when I was a kid. I liked them, and still like them very much.

Great pictures, looks like they are busy for Christmas.

I'm pleased to see they've already done their shopping. I, on the other hand, still have some to do.

I pick the top grandparent ... they've been to the camera store. Why is the 1957 stamp so familiar I was only 4 at the time ... I guess is turned up in most of the stamp albums. My Mum used to make a big thing of showing us what was on the Christmas stamp each year.

I love the photos! They all looked like they did some serious Xmas shopping... :)

Oooooo - 2 bags full from Georges - yes please. Haven't heard more than the first verse of Carol of the Birds (had forgotten that was its name) for years. Love that carol.

Just read Joan's comment. That 1957 stamp does look familiar and I was only born that year and in London so I couldn't possibly have seen it at the time.

An armload of shopping bags and an empty wallet. It must be Christmas. The season had snuck up on me. I need to think about what to get my kids for Christmas.

A very amusing series of photos - and I doubt any of them are heading down to the tree-ferns by the river, methinks they are heading back to the shops for more!

I love those stamps- they bring wonderful childhood memories. I was only 4-6 when they were released but they do look familiar - guess they were around for a while.

Guess I'd better get crackin' since I haven't started my shopping yet. Clever group of photos. I am particularly interested in those stamps!

Very interesting subject... the bags not the people.

I'd like to known what the man has in these bags, I mean the red bags Georges, it seems to be interesting for photographers. :-)
Bye Julie

They might be carrying presents for their grandchildren, years after they did write postcards to their loved ones, when they were young.
Brilliant melange of images. Chapeau!
