A Sydney Christmas - Nineth Day

Graffiti wall along the Promenade, Bondi Beach
Six White Boomers (Harris & Brown 1960)
Early on one Christmas Day a Joey Kangaroo,
Was far from home and lost in a great big zoo.
Mummy, where's my mummy? They've taken her away.
We'll help you find your mummy, son. Hop up on the sleigh.

Up beside the bag of toys little Joey hopped,
But they hadn't gone far when Santa stopped.
Unharnessed all the reindeer and Joey wondered why,
Then he heard a far off booming in the sky.

Chorus
Six white boomers, snow white boomers,
Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun.
Six white boomers, snow white boomers,
On his Australian run.

Pretty soon old Santa began to feel the heat,
Took his fur-lined boots off to cool his feet,
Into one popped Joey, feeling quite okay,
While those old man Kangaroos kept pulling on the sleigh.

Chorus

Joey said to Santa, what about the toys?
Aren't you giving some to these girls and boys?
They've got all their presents, son, we were here last night,
This trip is an extra trip, Joey's special flight.

Chorus

Soon the sleigh was flashing past right over Marble Bar,
Slow down there, cried Santa, it can't be far,
Come up on my lap here, son, and have a look around.
There she is, that's Mummy, bounding up and down.

Chorus

Well that's the bestest Christmas treat that Joey ever had,
Curled up in mother's pouch feeling snug and glad.
The last they saw was Santa heading northwards from the sun,
The only year the boomers worked a double run.

Chorus

Do you like the unadorned shot at the top? Or do you prefer your Santa with a side-order?
Australian Christmas stamps, 1964, 1965 & 1966
Note the change from 5d to 4c with the conversion to decimal currency in February 1966

That Santa looks like something out of a Hunter S Thompson novel. Love him.

I think I prefer the one at the top - it has more impact. I wonder if he has super powers that let him surf and smoke at the same time?

What an amusing mural, I like the top shot. The 1964 and 1965 are very familiar ... I must have been looking when Mum showed it to me.

Terrific find, although maybe a little disturbing.

I love this. Fits so well with my Bah Humbug view of Christmas as it is celebrated today. Now these stamps I recognise, particularly the first 2 (we arrived in 1963).

Santa is feeling rebellious now, that's why he is smoking. It he continues doing that, he may not live long. So, imagine how many poor kids wil be without presents for Christmas. Let send Santo for rehabilitation!

Somebody got creative with the spray paint.

I realize that we should not approve of graffiti, but whoever did that was very talented. I should add that Santa was reported to smoke a pipe not a cigar.

The lyrics are funny but I don't think that song is well known outside of Oz. Here we sing "Grandpa got run over by a reindeer..."

With a side order so I can see how big the Santa is.
Interesting to see the stamps, have to go down an look at some more from you.

Good that he did get to his mum.
The girl in the bottle is not mine but the child standing on one leg next to the water is a friend of mine.

Nice shades and an unusual surfer Santa: alcohol, cigars and... that grin! Not a fan of murals, but this is too funny and well done.

This one is in stark contrast to your previous posts on season. Never heard that sing-a-long! Would like to hear a chorus or two. Ha!

I think I like the top one. Don't you just love a santa with attitude!!!

Somehow Australian Santas look different to ours - and it is not just the surfboard instead of the sledge.

I like the guy walking by. Gives you pespective and more of an idea where the mural is. (Is thet the wall along the board walk/esplanade or whatever its called? I remember the stamps and the song.

About a decade ago I 'was Santa' for a day, providing sweets for the kids in the supermarket where I used to work (pictures on Monday).
Guess time has changed much since people looked with such friendly eyes as upon the stamps and the contemporary St.Claus on the wall...
Please have a wonderful Friday.

Julie: That is one mean looking Santa, no kid would sit on his lap.
