Sunday in the City - Greening the City

The City of Sydney council is the local government entity that governs Sydney in the Australian system of governance. The incumbent Lord Mayor is Clover Moore who also represents my electorate in the New South Wales state government. It is an independent/left/green amalgam with the logo "The city of villages". Over the weekend, the Town Hall was reopened to the public after a $40 million dollar refit which took two years to complete. The work has included an overhaul of fire and safety standards, implementation of environmentally sustainable design initiatives, inclusion of a multi-purpose space for exhibitions and community activities and aesthetic updates to many of the rooms.

In the town square, adjoining the Town Hall, there was a Live Green exhibition endeavouring to explain how the individual can reduce their own carbon footprint.

In Egypt this is only a dream!
Streets are full of almost broken cars polluting the air. People burn trash, also polluting the air...etc.
And at the same time other countries are working hard to educate people.
Here over 80 million people need education NOW...sigh!

Happy SIMC!

Only a dream here in the USA. Maybe if for once people could stop arguing for the sake of arguing, and see the true importance and need for living green, than things might change. Until then, we'll have to live vicariously through you.

Happy SIMC!!

Love that last shot. You can make even a toilet look like a work of art.

I wonder how long the exhibition is staying - I should take the kids in, they'd be interested.

James, I like the first shot too. Very satisfying (and soothing) somehow.

Shelle, there are lies, lies and damned statistics. Depends on how this is measured and compared with whom, I guess. And also on the agenda being put forward. There is a massive "green" argument going on in this country after the failure of Copenhagen. I am concerned that the environmental movement will lose out to fear and commercial greed.

Wondered if you had gone into the Town Hall, what did you think? I think they've done a good job, especially liked the two stained glass windows.

Great shots :) It feels good to see that people have started to realize how precious this planet is for everyone.

Julie - I was having a problem with text running up the right hand edge of some of my photos. I think the problem only occurred with Explorer and I use Firefox. I think I corrected it for Explorer. Could you go back a few posts where you were seeing this and tell me if you still see the problem? Thank you Ma'am.

I like this thing you have going down the side with all the events.

Nice shots. Especially the toilet.

What is the top shot ... I can't figure it out? The bottom shot is a bit surprising. As for the stuff in the middle, it looks like they are doing a good job of communicating their message in a way the man on the street can grasp.

Joan, look at the bottom photo. On the RHA you will see a green CI tank. I captured the edge of the tank with some of the "plastic" surround of the toilet enclosure. Now this enclosure was being held together with a couple of massive bolts. I liked the thread of the bolt in comparison with the rungs of the tank plust the particle board out of which the toilet was partially constructed. I nearly ran one of the CO2 images as lead, but let my instincts take a lead instead.
