'Brush up your Shakespeare ...

... start quoting him now' penned the swellegent Mr Cole Porter in 'Kiss me Kate', his riff upon 'The Taming of the Shrew' which took Broadway by storm in 1948.

Thinking along parallel lines, permit me to take a Shakespearian brush to these photographs taken in Castlereagh Street in the City, opposite Tattersalls.

Here we have our modern-day Hamlet, hanging out on the battlements of down-town Sydney, wondering whether he has the gumption to 'off' his mummy's new fella or whether he should just nip into the 'Elephant & Castle' on the corner for another coldie.

To be or not to be, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles
And, by opposing, end them.
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,
And the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pitch and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.

He made the right decision. A deranged mother is not a happy companion.

I'd say he made the right decision... cowardly or not (I don't much like to think of conscience in those terms, though)... Nice take on the theme, Julie. [You're way ahead of me... I'll be posting my "brush" theme later... and quite different.]

I love the application of the Old Bard to the tody's world - great post!
Thanks for your comment on my SC flag post. The southeast (and southwest)costal areas of the US are dotted with palm trees. Palmetto logs were used in the 1700's to build forts in SC and survived a British baobardment during the revolution, hence the selection as the state tree.

Joan, a theme can be a bit like a 'Riff' ... given a day to think about it can be quite exhilarating.

I am off for 6 hours on the harbour today to visit all the 'lighthouses' which I put in quotes because I suspect some will be beacons.

Another great peoplewatching post.

If you're ever looking for The Satyr in the Botanic Gardens, it is located near the Opera House gate, not far from the Man O'War Steps that I featured yesterday.

There's so much I miss about Australia and one thing is the sense of humour. Your last quote made me fall about! A totally satisfying set of photos in the sunshine.
