Let's turn back the clock

Substantial, and solid aren't they? And such a wonderful shade of red ...

So, why are they being replaced by fairly pedestrian boxes on stilts?

These little beauties are - from top to bottom - Cumberland Street, The Rocks; Bridge Road, Glebe; and, Macleay Street, Kings Cross.

I love them. We have red ones, too, but yours are much nicer.

These are great, Julie. I've only started noticing that there are still a few of these around the city. I photographed one at Woolloomooloo recently.

Replaced? Surely something can be done to stem my outrage! They go to enormous lengths to preserve building fabric which by it's nature is evolving, yet let the important relics slip quietly into oblivion.

Please start an action group Julie!

"replaced" may not be exactly true. What is happening, is that one of the new yukky style is planted next to the old one, or just around the corner from the old one, AND THE OLD ONE IS BOARDED UP!!

Masonite covers the inside of the mouth ... I kid you not. The one on Bridge Rd, Glebe and the one at Five Ways Paddo are both boarded up.

Yeah ... someone orta do sumthing ... sool the Opposition onto this, I reckon. They are agin the destruction of the grassy front verge, this should be right up their alleyway...

Boarded up ... how strange ... when other places are doing all they can to pretty up their streets with fake old. Love the middle shot.

They provide such a beautiful splash of colour to the streetscape, not to mention some solid class. I hope at least some of them will endure.

They look great. I’m glad they are not removing them. The top photo is my favourite.
