Sitting on the dock of the Bay

Waiting for my function on child immigrants at the Maritime Museum to commence, I wandered under Pyrmont Bridge and into Cockle Bay.

These two lads had a wonderful view of the Bay at their very doorstep. The honey-bee-chequered building is the IMAX Theatre which I must pluck up the courage to attend ... one of these days.

Cockle Bay is part of the larger Darling Harbour, the harbour being named after the 7th Governor of the state of NSW (the others of note being Philip, Hunter, King, Bligh, Macquarie, Brisbane, Darling, Bourke). Cockle Bay started life as a provider of shellfish for the aboriginal tribes of the area but was quickly polluted by industrial effluent come white man and his industry. Eventually it was home to a massive railway shunting and goods yard. This was converted into the entertainment district that we enjoy today.

The coming of the white man and industry sure can spoil a good thing.
Beautiful photos, Julie. I've never been to an Imax theatre, either, nor have I ever seen a 3D movie. I'd probably scream if I saw things coming at me.

This is a busy area and looks like you are having glorious weather. I first saw an IMAX theatre in Wash DC at the Smithsonian (To Fly) many years ago and have loved them ever since. What a beautiful harbor you have.

Love the name Cockle Bay...and the photos you've taken of it. Imax is a great experience.. I think you'll enjoy it once you decide to go.

No doubt the boys enjoy their fishing, but is it safe to eat the fish caught in the bay? I hope so.

I see I have dropped off of your link list. Too bad as I always felt privileged.

Ugly building that IMAX, most of Darling Harbour is fairly uninspiring (although your photos aren't). Not sure how you'd go with IMAX, could throw you quite a bit. Probably depends on what you see.

Wonderful reflections, glorious weather. Lucky you. How was your child immigration function?

I think Darling Harbour is a pleasant and quite successful development. When we went to Imax Ian abandoned after about the first 5 mins, something about the flicker made his head go funny. I stayed on and enjoyed the show.

When they were developing DH they found a few rail wagons that had rolled in.

Hi Julie, I find it an amazing coincidence that last monday I was in Sydney for the first time in 8 years and at the IMAX with a school group. I am convinced that I am in your picture. Very funny coincidence. Mark from Grafton.
