Not happy, Jann

I am a fan of Streets' Paddle Pops, not all flavours, in fact just one. I am a fan of chocolate paddle pops. The rest of my family seem to adore Magnums, but they leave a fatty residue in my mouth. The cpp does not leave a residue, probably because it is only composed of various extrusions of 'plastic'. But, I like it ...

The other day, I dropped into a 'convenience' store salivating for a cpp - it was hot, and I had been on my feet all arvo ... da da da da ... But he wanted $2.20 for it. The cpp I bought at the petol station out along the Putty Road was $1.60. The cpp I bought at the Pink Roadhouse in Oodnadatta was $1.60. The cpp I bought in Kununurra was $1.60.

Yet the cpp that I bought at the convenience store in Darlinghurst was $2.20. I wasn't dudded, because the cpp was still as delicious as always. But, I was gyped, because the store was more convenient, but less economic.

I guess I am a grumpy old something or other ...

How grumpy would you be if you were asked to pay $10.00 for a loaf of bread or two litres of milk like some retailers are asking customers to pay in Queensland after the floods?.

Very.
Grumpy. Very grumpy.

But I guess this is how the 'free market' operates. When there is less of something, you can jack the price up and still sell things.

If the price is 'controlled' that is called socialism.

And we don't like socialism in this country.

Unless you are a cpp eater ...

Actually, when I think of it, how much does a loaf of bread and two litres of milk cost normally? A loaf of my bread is about $3.60 and 2 litres of milk is about the same. Making a total of about $7.20. So there is a small element of price-gouging, but not as much as I had figured.

Terrible, though, that someone would try to take advantage of flood victims. Unless, of course, that person is a flood victim also, and just trying to get by. Who knows?
But higher prices at convenience stores? That's true worldwide, or at least in Canada as well as in Australia.
I won't go to the convenience store, which is within walking distance of our house, because the prices are too high. My husband won't go to the small supermarket, which is in our town, because he thinks their prices are too high. He will drive to the city next door, to save money. I try to support the small supermarket, because I want it to stay in business. As a former small business partner, I know how it hurts when customers go to the city.

I have been grumpy about my local coffee shop jacking up the price from $3 to $3.30 this week, after their Summer break. That's a 10% increase, which is way above the cost of inflation. Of course, I'm still going to go there because I love their brand of coffee but it still makes me grumpy too and feel like I need to have a whinge.

Magnums suck.
I quite like a banana paddle-pop.
And there was that summer I obsessed over chocolate paddle pops.
Currently, I am on a quest to track down a Weis fruit bar in the original flavour (they call them passionfruit now) - I know they still make them - I just can't find them round these parts.
It's not like you can order them over the internet either.
They make them in Toowoomba.
When I go home, I load up on Kirks drinking ginger ale (not the dry one), Honey Jumble biscuits and Sunlight soap. I can't buy any of them in Victoria.

Oh, hope that is not your wrapper discarded on the ground. Leave only footprints and ice cream wrappers. Pine Lime Splice ice cream is my choice.

You gotta pay for convenience. Can't beat a chocolate paddle pop, whatever its made of.

Grumpy but justified IMHO.

But I can't believe Queensland flood victims are being ripped off to the tune of $10 for a loaf of bread! I bet the retailer didn't pay that much over the wholesale price.

Does anyone eat those rainbow ones? They are truly awful. $100 fine for littering.

Julie said...

*grin* ... nope, did not litter. I placed it out neatly in this verge garden, took my photo then stuffed it in my pocket until I found a bin about 4 blocks away.

Letty: I have not had a hj biscuit for ages, they are gingered. Nah, sunlight soap takes me back to the farm when the water would not lather. But a Weis fruit bar. They are corkers, too. I did not know they were from the garden city. However, if you go to Pier 4 at Circular Quay, and look in the standalone white freezer on the RHS of the entrance, you will find a Mango/Vanilla Weis Fruit Bar. But they cost a fortune ... But yes, yummee ...

I feel as if I've gone on a wonderful little lark with you and your choco pop. I know I'd love it, too, but we have no such thing here in Brattleboro.

They are my favourite too. I used to have one every morning tea break when I was at high school. I don't have them often now. $2.20???? I used to pay 2 shillings.
