Lord Howe Island - a lagoon

LHI is a small crescent shaped extinct volcano crater, with the lagoon fringed on its east by pristine sands and on its west by a coral reef full of tropical fishes and a vast array of coral. This first image was upon our return from snorkeling from a glass-bottomed boat on the Sunday. In the background are (L) Mount Lidgbird (777m) and (R) Mount Gower (873m). They are both topped with rainforest.

On the Tuesday we boated across to North Bay for the day, walking the isthmus to Old Gulch, where the wind was way gusty to clamber around to New Gulch. After a BBQ lunch, we hiked 2/3 way up Mount Eliza which afforded thiswonderful views across the lagoon to the twin mountains at the southern end. The final image shows across the lagoon, with Blackburn Island dwarfed in the centre. All the while we were 'twitching' - hunting for the birds on our list. More of that detail from Monday on my travel blog, Hither & thither.

I've seen a lot of the world and I still think this is the most beautiful place I have ever seen.

I can see why there's rain forest on the mountains, if those wet clouds hover on top all the time.
Good for you, doing all that hiking and clambering. I'm pretty sure I couldn't, but, for birds, and for such spectacular scenery, I might be tempted to try.
These photos are all beautiful, but the final one is like a scene from a dream.

I guess the rain forest explains the interesting cloud formations. Great shots all.

Ah Julie, I love your blog. I love coming back to it. The tram images are particularly poignant - speaking of which, Ive photoshopped trams coming down George St - you may be interested. Anyway, thrilled to have time to come back to your blog and those remarkable shots about town.

Those clouds are amazing.

The clouds over the mountains have that spooky story book feeling about them .. pirates and treasure hunters and stuff.

Do you know the book 'Swallows & Amazons' by Arthur Ransome? I made a comment to this very feeling early on in the week, when we were sitting around discussing the books we had brought along, hoping to read.

The top photo, contrasting beautiful natural scenery with the occasionally bright paint on the boats, is wonderful.
