Botany Cemetery - Statuary

Botany Cemetery is dominated by fresh-air and sunlight. It is open and it is expansive, not in the least maudlin and dark.

As befits the Australian self-concept, I found it to be an egalitarian graveyard. There are maybe half a dozen mausoleum(s), but mostly graves are unpretensious. It goes without saying, therefore, that the statuary is not of a personal nature. It is of this ethereal, heavenly bent. Unlike somewhere like Pere LaChaise which is replete with representations meant to aggrandise the individual.

All four photos were taken on the same day. The deep blue were facing to the south, the grey was facing to the north - towards the city.

It is a great looking and beautiful place. I remember walking by it and going in many times.

What a beautiful spot, Julie. I love the second photo with the deep blue sky, and the last one with a view of the beach!

And we all need angels in our lives... Your first picture looks very comforting and peaceful.

These photos are beautiful to be sure. Your post from yesterday - the teddybear makes me so sad!

All I can add is to "look towards the blue." What a blue it is and the contrast with the statuary makes it seem like a painting. Love the shot down the hill towards the water.

I can feel a sense of the place Julie just by looking at your photos - solitary but peaceful!
Love the last pic.

Julie, did you include those excruciatingly ugly signs just to remind us of where we live, a city blighted by unsubtle 'oversignage' ?

The last shot reminds me of a little cemetery in a small town in France with the farmland/vinyards in the background. The top angel is stunning.

Hi JUlie, when I come to Sydney in June, I will visit Botany Cemetery, just as I did Pere le Chaise, I hope it doesn't sound macabre but I think cemeteries are sad but beautiful places.
Take care

Oh, man! I love me a good cemetery! That is so neat how you got two different sky colors by just shooting in two different directions! - We were on a trip recently and planned it so that we could stop and have a picnic in our favorite cemetery. I can't get enough of angel statuary and the children's graves always make me cry.
