St Stephen's was designed by Edmund Blackett and erected in 1874. This was well after the cemetery that surrounds it, was full to overflowing.
The day of my visit, the church was deserted, save for a pair of electricians who graciously gave me the run of the place. I even braved the rickety steps up to the choir stalls. St Stephen's is unusual in that it has an attached graveyard. This is not the usual case in suburban Sydney, unlike parts of the UK.

I'm enjoying your visit to Newtown.
Your St. Stephen's interior, wooden ceiling and all, looks just like our Cathedral of St. George the Martyr, mother church of the Anglican/Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem. It was dedicated in 1898 and is the closest thing we have to "an English church" in Jerusalem.

Dina, that is eerily similar. For me, it is fascinating to know that there is an Anglican/Episcopal church in Jerusalem. It had not occurred to me that there might be one. How wonderful! I went to an ecumenical 'Assissi Peace Concert' last night. You would have loved it!
I love your first shot. It makes the cathedral look so grand.
Lovely, the beams are magnificent. Have been in the churchyard but not the church itself.
Beautiful and historic!
Classic beauty!
What a magnificent shot!
I'm always amazed with gothic architectures... they're really amazing!! :)
It's wonderful inside. I recognise so many of these churches and have photographed some of the exteriors but have never been inside.
Your top interior shot is great ... great that the lighting was on. I love churches like this just sitting quietly in the emptiness and contemplating. Contemplating on this particular church I see that it is actually quite plain .. limited stained glass and the ceiling plain wood just that splash of red down the centre aisle.
I am a wisp of a thing ... and move stealthily ... shhh ...
Well worth the view from the stalls, a beautiful church.
A lovely picture book church. The interior is gracious.
Beautiful interior and architecture.
