Camp Curlew

Camp Curlew, on the eastern shore of Little Sirius Cove, was a famous artists' camp, where many prominent Australian artists lived and painted during the 1890s. Artists such as Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts, Julian Ashton, Henry Fulwood and Nelson Illingworth.

Nothing remains of the camp, save marks in rocks and once-cleared areas. It is accessible by pathways and steps. By the early 1900s the camp had been well-enough established to include a weatherboard dining room, a billiard tent and well-maintained gardens. Camp Curlew was maintained for about 22 years, but was finally abandoned when the adjoining land was chosen for the new Taronga Zoo.

The two paintings included are:
Tom Roberts, The Camp at Sirius Cove (1899), and
Arthur Stretton, Near Stretton's Camp at Sirius Cove (1892)

This is a beautiful spot. Work and physio was quite exhausting last week. Haven't been out photographing yet because the crutches are limiting. Luckily I have had a library of stored photos to use. Hope to get out there and snapping again soon.

I really enjoy your small shot of the pathway in a 'tunnel' of trees...

An understandable location for that purpose. Is is accessible enough that you could go there for the day to paint?

I respond to your question in my Sunday post. It goes up just over four hours from when I leave this comment (no idea what time it is in Sydney).

How nice, to have an actual frame set up so you can see from the artist's perspective. It looks like a nice place to visit.

What a great spot, I have never been there and did not know the history of the place. I always enjoy walking with you, your images are always superb.

The comparison images from the artists are a real bonus.

Love the first shot.
My mind has stepped right through the screen and is right there.
I can hear it and smell it.

Letty, the harbour is riddled with little shorelines such as this. I will do more of them. Eventually ...
