Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA)

The MCA is building a new wing and, as the expression goes, you have to crack an egg to make an omelette. Situated in an art-deco building designed in the '30s in a prime position on the western shores of Sydney Cove (SC is the water, Circular Quay is the land), the detritus is encroaching upon well-trodden public walking space.

Here are three aspects: the boardwalk looking to the north; looking along the western foreshore towards the bridge with the roof of a ferry wharf in the foreground; and, looking due west to the MCA itself. All photographs taken from Cahill Walk about 9am.

Lovely vantage point in the first photo! Hope you are enjoying your summer down there. I miss mine up here.

It will be good when they finish it and open the space up again. I'm not sure I'm going to like the result if the drawings were anything to go by.

The external results? It is a concern to me, too. But I know that changes to skylines like this take a bit of getting used to. I just want the grass and the promenade back again.

I don't like the look of the design either. I wonder if it will look any better when completed.

I just hope they fill it with great art! I have never noticed that herringbone patterned pavers either.

I didn't know they were building a new wing but saw it on TV tonight ... hey presto a few minutes late and I find you are showcasing it too. I find modern art rather hard to deal with so don't expect to be a regular visitor.

Yes, I saw it on TV this evening with all those light bulbs that react to bodies passing through a room and tape measures that move as people pass by ... mmm ... but I also so the story of the old codger trying to 'ward off' dementia ... maybe trying to work out the positives in modern art is enough to keep the brain cells active.

I 'm with Peter and never noticed the zigzag pavers before, Amazing what perspective can highlight. I am fascinated by modern art but that doesn't mean that I like it. We heard recently that our GoMA is the most visited gallery in Australia. Some people must like modern art. We like going there too.

Interesting to learn of this development Julie. Like the perspective of the boardwalk lines in your first image.

Love that first photo, Julie, the water, the pedestrians, the gardens, the lawn — and then the mess in the upper lefthand corner. Progress, they call it.
