Sydney's ferries

This is the ferry, Scarborough, named after one of the vessels in the First Fleet which anchored in Sydney Cove in January 1788. This modern day incarnation is heading into Circular Quay with the Harbour Bridge behind, and beneath that the joys of Luna Park, which is on the shores of Lavender Bay.

This is one of my very favourite sights in Sydney, my challenge to myself the next time I come over is to climb the bridge! How long did you live in Perth Julie?

A perfect photo, Julie. I love harbors and bridges and ferries. Some of my earliest memories are of such things, and some of my most recent, too. I might be living on the prairie, but my soul is standing on a ferry as it goes under a bridge.

Kay, I am glad you did not intend a reference to Charon. I have a few ferry/harbour shots ready for this week, and want them to be light and visual without my head, as is its wont, going off all serious and meaningful!!!

Is that what is called a cliche shot? Even if it is it screams out "Beautiful Sydney!"

Absolutely, Diane. It is a cliche shot. I went into the city early on Sunday morning and did the Cahill Walk which goes across Sydney Cove. I have a few to show across this week. I needed to restock the photographic larder for the next little while.

Beautiful urban scene... I'd love to ride that ferry!

See that whitey coloured multi-storey building on the left on the other side of the harbour - you can see it through the bridge near the towery thing - I reckon that's the building we stayed in when we first visited Sydney when I was about 12.
Dad was working for a company down there and they put us up for a few weeks right on the harbour.
It was right in front of Blues Point Reserve.
What an awesome view we had of Luna Park, the bridge, the harbour and we used to catch the ferry all the time.
I wish I was more appreciative of it at the time.

Letty: That whitey building is further around that BPR but I get your point. To stand on the end of BPR and look eastward takes one's breath clean away. One of my (many) aims for 2012 is to take more ferries. Dare I aim to take every ferry that plies the harbour? I will see how much of a noose that puts around the old neck.

A worthy aim, I love the naming of the First Fleet class.

Yes, so do I, Peter. Historical connections like that are so worthwhile.

I wonder whether the builders of the bridge realised what an enduring icon it would become?

Julie said...

Oh I think so, Joe. It was a massively big deal at the time! And Bradfield was one cluey gent.

My photographic larder runs out sometime this week. I think I will have to do a blog shutdown until the weather improves or I go somewhere interesting for a drive during the hols.

They've erected the metalwork for the images to be displayed on the bridge for New Years Eve celebrations.
