Gargoyles in shining armour

Both the State Theatre and the old Gowings Building in Market Street are undergoing extensive renovations both inside and out. Both are keeping their iconic neon signs, even though Gowings went bust!

I have photographed the State Theatre facade before but do not remember this heraldic motif. But I cannot find my previous shots. Is this the genuine article, or is this some tacky, post-modern plaster-of-paris arty-farty crap??!!??

Not to put too fine a point on it ...

You amaze me with your incredible photography, Julie, Sorry I've been absent for so long. At last I have decent Internet connection and can visit and comment easily at last! Have a wonderful week. Jo

I'm thinking "tacky, post-modern plaster-of-paris arty-farty crap" here, Julie. Not that I've ever seen this theatre, and not that I'm an expert on anything at all, but I've seen plenty of old buildings, and this doesn't feel like classic-gargoyle to me.

It looks a bit fake to me, too. And why would the shields be blank?

Hmmm, I'm with you on this one, Julie, they do look fake. Nevertheless, makes for great shots!

If you can't tell the difference, does it matter? I'm glad they are keeping the neon signs.

I don't remember those, either. Obviously they've never made an impression. I miss Gowings.

I should pay more attention when I walk past there.

The don't look ornate enough do they? The shield seems too large, almost as if it is placed there to avoid carving the detail. Is this opposite Myer?
