Theme Day - People watching

Each Friday, I journey to spend time with my elder brother, who lives in an 'dementia secure' aged-care facility following a stroke in October 2011. This was their 'Gentle Exercise' class, during which they came alive, in ways I had not seen before. The class was led by Kate, the therapist, and by Barry, my brother.

This is my contribution to the City Daily Photo Blog Theme Day for September 2012

A great activity to give needed time, attention, and exercise to the people in this residence. The old adage, "my brother's keeper" is strongly at play here!

Concentration and smiles, so nice Julie, a wonderfully sensitive series of images, I love the gentle 'hand holding'. Kate and Barry are special, you too.

A poignant series, very difficult to comment on strictly photographic terms. But the way captured it and conveyed your emotion to us - strangers is beyond words.

These are beautiful and touching. The ball and balloon look like they are suspended in the air. I'll show this to my wife, who does some of her work in what we call nursing homes.

Thank you for the reminder about theme day. I'll have a post on the theme uploaded in about four hours, midnight my time. Won't be able to link them to your theme day blog and the Facebook page until our morning.

Beautiful! They looked so absorbed! I wonder what you call the bumpy ball...

We call it Durian ball here because of the fruit with the same appearance.

Bob: I often have to wait until the morning for linking, too.

Layrayski: Yes, I know the Durian fruit, but I think here this is called a texture ball. It helps everyone grasp hold of it too.

I'm very moved by this beautiful series. Much of my professional work involves the elderly and disabled (a term I never liked), and I'd like to show this to colleagues. Thanks for continuing to support us on theme day.

Wonderfully sensitive portraits, as always Julie. I particularly love the hands - so much said in that photograph.

Beautiful post, Julie. So moving.

I'll have to wait until the third to post, when I return home.

Oh Julie, this is a great contribution. I love all photos, but if I had to select only one I'd probably chose the hand in hand close of course (or the smiles... Or the balloon, or...)!

This is by far the best post I've seen today. So full of caring and life!

Thanks for the information Julie. And thanks also for the few who aren't on Facebook and do not wish to open an account (VDP has a page but I have no profile nor do I want one).

Great idea for the theme. I'm sure these people enjoy the exercise time and visits from family.

Did you see the article on treating dementia on the weekend SMH ... how in Holland they are keeping people doing normal things but in a secure environment.

what a nice series...
i worked in such a home, but in the restaurant, that was an interesting experience...

This seems like such a caring facility. We are looking for a secure dementia facility for my husband in. or near Adelaide. Beds here are rarer than hen's teeth.
