Getting a feel for early Sydney

The Glover cottages are located on an artificial rock shelf on the east side of Kent Street. The 1820s cottage was built by Thomas Glover, the mason responsible for much of the fine craftsmanship on the government buildings commissioned by Governor Macquarie, and is said to be one of the first terrace style buildings in Sydney. Much of the adjacent rock shelves were quarried for buildings in early Sydney, like The Lord Nelson..

A historical treasure still looking in good shape. I wonder how many of today's buildings will last so long. In our area we see 20 year old houses being bulldozed to make way for something new.

We have that here, too, Diane. Bulldozing. But I think t s to do with the economics rather than the quality og the buildings. We @need@ the economic activity, therefore evrerythinh has its price.

I reckon that buildings have to pass the 60 year mark. If they get past 60 there is a good chance they will live to a very long age. Up until then it is hard to see their historic value so it is easy to let the bull dozers roll.
