Herbal jungle

Here are four of the herbs I have in my front garden this season:

(Above): Oregano, which I use for anything remotely Italian;

(Left):Rosemary, which is great with lamb, although lamb is very expensive;
(Left): Basil, which is a great all-rounder, but also excellent in tomato salads, and, of course, in pesto, although pine-nuts cost the earth;

(Below):Chives, which I love, together with Spring Onions, and Silver-beet (aka Spinach) in a Risotto.

Yes, the purple flowers have dropped from the Jacaranda that straddles our western fence.

Two of these herbs are attached to a trellis on said fence, in the newest rage, a vertical garden.

Tomorrow, I will show you what happened to my Parsley.

My mother used to have a lot of herbs when we still had the greenhouses. These days I have to buy them at my local Coop.

The problem with fresh herbs from a store, Steffe, is that to charge $3 - $5, they have to give you a massive bunch. This massive bunch wilts VERY quickly. And then they are done ...

The problem with herbs in my garden in summer, is that I have to water them daily or they wilt VERY quickly. But they refresh with water ...

The grand-daughter from yesterday, eats Basil from the bush ...

I have all of those herbs in my garden too. Though I am having a little trouble with the basil right now ... the heat is bothering it. We have some great basil plants last year but they die off at the first sign of a frosty morning. We also had a very vigorous rocket plant which I liked but pulled out coz it was all over the place, haven't planted any more yet. I used to have a couple of different thyme plants but after years of growing well they turned up their toes and I am having trouble getting a new plant going though I noticed the other day a little bit is still hanging on.

I like herbs they are so easy to grow. And in my experience don't demand much watering ... but mine are in the garden not in pots.

My favorite herb is tarragon. Refreshing post, full of good smells.
