Bin morning, Mount Vernon Lane

Banners flutter along Glebe Point Road trumpeting the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the suburb: 1859. For each major artery that weaves through the suburb there is a service lane: Wigram Road is accompanied by Wigram Lane. Lanes were the original method of servicing the sewer requirements, allowing discreet access to the "night cart".

Although the night cart is no more, access is still required by council waste management vehicles. This lane lies deep within the original parcel of land granted the the Church of England as "The Glebe" which is a word indicating a plot of land belonging to an English parish church or an ecclesiastical office.

It must be a squeeze getting the garbage trucks down those narrow lanes. I'm loving your view of the suburb, when I lived close enough to walk around the area I was not a photographer.

Very interesting series. You'll have to let us know if the Glebe Market is still good. Haven't been there for a long time. I know Gleebooks is good, esp the second hand store.

Great inner city shot. We had friends that lived in Stanmore (their dad still lives there). When I was a kid, we loved playing cricket in the laneway behind their house. Great memories.

It is so strange that wise people in 1859 thought of useful things like service lanes, that here are still alien to any local planning mind.

This is a really fine shot, Julie. Entirely satisfying.

I have a fascination with alleys. Here they can only be found in the old, old neighborhoods.

night cart . . . outhouse . . . privvy . . . loo. Surely a few hundred have done Ph.D. dissertations on the subject, or at least the different English words for it. This kind of take on history interests me more than kings and queens.

In all my selfish travelling, I missed your move!

Hope it all goes/went swimmingly of course, I've wandered back through a month of pics, love them all, and following your adventure!

Cheers!
