Theme Day - Waiting with wonder

In a tradition that I can remember from the early 50s, the windows of the David Jones' Elizbeth Street store come alive in the lead-up to Christmas.

These photos are beyond my imagining. I am sure there will be many prompted to think of the wonderous anticipation of Christmas looking at these images. What was the story being told in the windows this year?

Julie said...

As JE hints, often as you wander from window to window, a marionette story unfolds of some aspect of the Christmas story. However, this year each window depicted a carol: Silent Night, Good King Wenceslaus, I saw three ships, Joy to the World, etc. It meant that you could approach each window independently rather than needing to begin at the beginnning ...

Maybe it's the rainy day or the glass of wine I just had but I almost burst into tears when this image came up. I haven't seen any of the other submissions for Theme Day but I already know nothing else will be as good as this. Bravo, bravo, bravo, Miss Julie.

How did you manage to get these. They are stunning. Everytime I try and get shots of kids there they get hurried away by their parents.

You've captured the wonder and innocence so exquisitely here . . . timeless.

Wow! Beautiful photos!

The much anticipated David Jones Windows.

Does Myer have one too? I know the Myer in Melbourne has it, and I used to join everyone in going there to 'view' it. :-)

Julie said...

Not Myer in Sydney, KM. David Jones already had that as a tradition well before Myer established itself on a nearby corner.

Beautiful and thoughtful. That was an age when waiting seemed always too long. A perfect choice for today.

Well done Julie!

Julie, I just had to come back to this ... the photos are so beautiful, now I have to find time to go look at the windows ... as much to see the wonder on children's faces as the windows themselves.

Awesome WAITING photos. I am particularly smitten by the angelic look on the faces of all the children. Super!

young girls waiting in wonder - yes quite different from my photo on Old Hyde - I have some other photos of the Travellers Call to post at a later date - then I may be able to show you what is there now - it was very much a last minute post.
