Symphony in the Domain - the finale

The 2011 theme for this free annual concert was 'Shakespeare' - but more on that tomorrow.

Let's start at the finale for once! It is the same one each year, and the canon on either side of the stage is a bit of a hint.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Sydney Philharmonia Choir, both conducted by Brett Weymark, performed Tchaikovsky's '1812 Overture'. The thousands of sydney-siders sprawled on rugs, waved sparklers or small torches (sold at the venue and with all proceeds going to the QLD Premier's Appeal for flood victims), while the canons exploded and fireworks shot into the sky behind us.

A magical end to a splendid evening.

Just love the 1812 Overture especially the firing of the cannons.

You've caught the energy of the performance.

NOw I wish I'd gone. By the time I got everything done it was getting late and I couldn't be bothered going in. Where were you to get those shots? Very interested to hear how the Shakespeare worked.

Robert: by 'we' you mean the Philharmonia? Yep, you were beaut. More in the next post.

Ann: We were under the trees in the first lay-by along Art Gallery Road. But next year, shall take an umbrella to get me through the sun of the afternoon, and venture further across into The Domain proper. I arrived at 4pm but the place did not really fill until after 7pm. We had a fence in front of us, as you will see in some of the next photos.

I've never seen pyrotechnics at the symphony in The Domain before. Cool.

I've always felt the concerts are just too much trouble ... even when living in the city. Must rectify that some day.

If I go I normally get there between 6 and 7pm and sit on the slight rise near the Tree of Truth. A long way from the stage but I figure it doesn't matter for the Symphony. Jim, they've had fireworks at all the one's I've been to.

The thing that irritates me with sitting right up there, is that everyone yaks and plays no attention whatsoever. Just not me. They can do that. That is fine. I just have to find a spot that suits my style of involvement.

The atmosphere was terrific, Peter. With that continual electric buzz. The ending was just soooo OTT. Great stuff ...
