The ceremonial heart of the City

Some of you may disagree with my title here. However, this is the intersection of George Street with both Park Street, and its extension Druitt Street. In the lower shot, I am standing on the Town Hall steps. Hopefully, before I die, the buildings opposite the Town Hall will be razed and a public park created. Council already owns many of the buildings, and are just waiting for a few hold-outs. Below this intersection, is a criss-cross of arcades. Below the arcades is the city-circle subway.

Do you mean they're going to take out the old Woolworth's and the buildings beside it? I think they match the town hall steps quite nicely.

That is interesting news. A good place for a park. It would set off the Town Hall. Show me the Hilton Building.

Okay ... I will try to get a shot of the Hilton ... How on earth to make THAT interesting ... ?

I think it's supposed to be more like a town square than a park.

What, concrete and ramps and stuff like the forecourt of St Mary's?

Ugh !!!

Whilst an open space would be very nice, I'll miss Woolies, its extremely useful where it is.

Ann - Mum just forwarded me your comment. That's hilarious! It's a preview link to the mammoth photo book I just finished and ordered from Blurb last night. 252 pages and nearly 500 photos of Alannah's first year.

Nice to see this end of town, we don't get up there too often...

Unsure of a new empty square - Cook + Phillip UGH agree. I will miss Woolies too.

A car park! How can that be better than what is there.

Reminds me of Clem's hole in Brisbane, not being a brisbanite of the early 70s you probably wouldn't know about it but they resumed buildings and dug an enormous hole in front of the City Hall and put in a car park ... what a carry on there was but actually that car park is a great asset.

I was envisaging a town square more akin to a Roman Piazza or a Parisien 'Place' - bordered by beautiful cafes, florists, fountains etc. One can live in hope.
